The Sequela Christi—Christ Our Model of Morality

In the story of the rich young man’s encounter with Jesus, we see that the defining question of the encounter is, “Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?” (Matthew 19:16). Christ then lists off a few of the commandments to which the man boldly responds, “All these I have observed; what do I still lack?” What Jesus answers him in return is the centre of Gospel morality and the only way to life eternal: “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” (Emphasis added). This “Come, follow me,” is what we call the Sequela Christi. This is the centre of discipleship with Christ—following Him. It consists in imitating Him, but also in letting Him enter our hearts through the Sacraments and prayer, and, by so doing, becoming...

Question: Do we need revelation to know that man’s last end (his goal) is heaven, or can we know this by human reason alone?

There was a time a few years ago when I was roped into an atheist group on Facebook comprised of all sorts of atheists from Gibraltar—my hometown. I was the only “theist” in the group and I quickly became the piece of meat that one lion had brought for the others to feast on. What fun it was! I quickly realised that...

A few years ago, I asked myself, "What is the meaning of life?" I know—super cliché; but nevertheless I just genuinely had that question. I wasn't having a...

Decaffeinated Faith

I’m not a huge coffee drinker, but two or three times a week, or even more or less depending on my workload, I'll have a cup or two. Now, I'm not a big fan of the taste of coffee (scandal, I know). The real reason I might drink it, however, is because of the natural “boost” that the caffeine gives me. It makes me feel awake and helps me into that “Go get ‘em!” attitude. Why am I saying this? Because...
